As a celebration of the area’s notable history, Gold Rush Days takes place in the city on the Labor Day weekend. As of the 2010 United States census, the community had a population of 42,108 with a density of 866.3 people per square mile. The total number of households was 14,368 with 1798 of those being made up of single-person households. The average household size was 2.93 and the average family size was 3.20. Approximately 42% of the population was made up of those 45 and older and the median age was 40.6 years.
